Shingle Options

Choose shingles with a clear view of appearance, construction and performance ratings. The right discussion includes the whole roof system, not only the sample color.

A shingle choice has more than one part

The roof is a large part of the house’s appearance. Color, pattern and shadow can make the same brick or siding look different. Those visual choices sit alongside separate questions about the product’s construction, testing and installation requirements.

For a Richardson replacement, start with the roof shape and the look you want to retain or change. Then compare the actual product and compatible components. A label such as architectural or Class 4 answers one question; it does not describe every part of the installed roof.

Choose the look and construction separately

Architectural shingles use laminated layers to give the surface depth. A three-tab pattern reads flatter and more regular, while designer products can create a stronger slate-like or shake-like visual rhythm. Color blends and the slope facing the street influence how much of that pattern you see.

A small sample can look different across a broad roof plane. Compare the proposed color with the permanent parts of the house, including brick, stone and trim, in useful daylight. A darker color or deeper shadow does not by itself establish a stronger impact rating. GAF’s shingle guide separates construction categories.

Shingle types and impact ratings

TermWhat it describesWhat it does not establish
Three-tabA single-layer asphalt shingle with a regular tab pattern.A universal service life or the suitability of a specific product for every slope.
Architectural or dimensionalLaminated construction that gives the surface depth. One impact rating shared by every architectural shingle.
DesignerA product style with a more pronounced or specialized appearance.Automatic insurance savings or a particular installation warranty.
Class 4 impact ratingPerformance under the specified laboratory impact test.A hail-proof roof or guaranteed claim or premium outcome.

GAF explains the controlled Class 4 testing. Compare the exact product rather than treating a construction category as a rating.

The parts installed with the shingle

The field shingles work with the rest of the assembly. Starter strips support the edge detail, ridge caps finish the peaks, underlayment provides a secondary layer and flashing carries water through intersections. A premium shingle cannot correct a poorly connected wall joint.

Ventilation also needs an air path through the roof assembly. Intake and exhaust have to be considered together, with the actual attic layout and insulation. Manufacturer warranty eligibility can depend on the installed combination and application, so the written proposal should identify the system and actual coverage terms.

Shingle Options FAQs

Does a darker shingle change how the roof looks?

Yes. A darker blend can change contrast with the walls and trim, and shadows vary with the shingle profile and roof slope. Compare actual samples with the house rather than relying only on a screen color.

Does a Class 4 rating guarantee a discount?

No. Insurers set their own eligibility and documentation requirements. Confirm the proposed product and any discount with your insurer before treating savings as part of the budget.

Do the starter, cap and underlayment affect the roof system?

Yes. They are functional parts of the assembly and can affect system eligibility under the manufacturer’s terms. A product warranty does not replace sound detailing or a separate workmanship agreement.
